Corbett Park is one of India's jewels... set aside first as a hunting reserve and then as a reserve for tigers it is a terrific wooded area home to a few tigers but many hundreds of other species.

Take a jeep through in the early morning and you will clock up dozens of bird species from the jungle, fowls from which all domestic chickens descended, through to woodpeckers and barbets, thrushes and finches and many more.

I remember splashing across a shallow stream and seeing my first Wallcreeper taking flight and landing against the side of a huge boulder... so intense was this long-wanted birding first that I had an instant headache... soon soothed by spotting Tickell's Blue Flycather, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Maroon Orioles and many other superb birds.

I'd recommend Tiger Camp owned and run by India's best Birding Outfit under Mohit Argawaal with brilliant guides and organisation second to none.
