By day the Vieques Bioluminescent Bay looks deceptively normal, but after the sun goes down, taking a swim in the inky blue waters of the bay becomes a veritable phosphorescent light show. As you paddle in the water, your body is enveloped in glowing green and blue light like a natural glow stick.

The bay’s eerie glow comes from microorganisms giving off bioluminescence as a natural defense against predators. This phenomenon happens occasionally in other waters around the world, but this bay is one of the few that puts on a show every night.
