Vai Beach has the largest natural palm forest in Europe, which can be a surprise when you arrive from Crete's rockier interior. The water is clear and bright blue and good for snorkelling.
In the 70s this used to be a famous hippy spot, in the 80s it was a backpacker haunt – which lead to it getting a bit messy – but in the 90s it was cleaned up and protected and now it's lovely again, if more organised than it used to be, with a bar, cafe and umbrella/ gear hire etc.
