This romantic corner of historic Sardinia is a place of peace and natural beauty. Near the sleepy resort town of Alghero, with its narrow, old streets and wonderful ancient edifices, the beach is itself guarded by the ruins of a huge17th Century tower and replicated on a smaller scale in the form of a number of other coves secreted behind headlands in both directions along the shore. The water is shallow and calm and the sand a warm shade of caramel, and if you get bored of sunning yourself, there are two sets of stalactite and stalagmite-filled grottoes to explore, one on foot and one by boat.
