This open sandy beach, near the town of Aberdour in Fife, has spectacular views to the Islands of Inchmickery and Inchcolm with its famous abbey. Silver Sands lies on the Fife coastal path, and cliff top walkers at nearby Hawkcraig enjoy magnificent views across the river Forth to Edinburgh. The cliffs between Silver Sands and Aberdour harbour are popular with abseilers and climbers, and because Hawkcraig was formed from volcanic rock, the character of the plant life here is quite rare.
The area is also notable for waders and sea duck, including the goldeneye, that breed in the far north and then fly south to over-winter on the Forth. Twitchers can additionally keep a beady eye out for red breasted mergansers, cormorants, oystercatchers and curlews, which are often seen feeding on the large grassy area behind the beach at high tide.
