Fine, pale sand isn't to everyone's taste and for lovers of all things British, you can't get much more British than Ringstead's noisy shingles surrounded by striking white chalk cliffs on top of which green farmland sprouts. This is the Jurassic Coast, so its rocks are riddled with fossils, which can add a new element of entertainment to rock pooling and collecting interesting shaped and holey pebbles off the beach. The Famous Five would love this place – there are sure to have been smugglers hiding in this cove at some point. Bring your picnic and lashings of ginger beer and enjoy having plenty of room to spread out on.
