This beach looks a lot more tropical than the location should. The beach is by a river mouth along which palm trees and oleanders grow, and there’s a little waterfall, creating a ‘tropical island lagoon’ atmosphere. The fine, pale sand and greeny waters adds to the illusion.

Anywhere this lovely is bound to suffer at the hands of tourism and the beach can be pretty busy in season. Committed people will walk the 30mins down the steep stairs cut into the hill to get to the beach, but you can also be dropped on the beach by boat if you don’t fancy the return journey up the hill again. Despite the difficulty of access Preveli is very busy in the season, it’s not very long so doesn’t take long for the sand to be flooded with bodies. Slightly out of season and you’ve got yourself a perfect tropical oasis in the Mediterranean, which is just what the people behind Bounty chocolate bars thought when they shot their advertisements here.
