Praia do Barril is recommended by many sources as the prettiest beach is a region of vast, pretty beaches. To get there you have to walk though scenic olive groves and copses of carob, almond or fig trees, among a birdwatchers paradise of sand dunes and mud banks, before reaching a wide stretch of warm, corn coloured sand.

It’s close to another pretty-beach recommendation, Praia da Terra Estreita, which is a narrow spit of sand.

Tourism here is of a restrained ilk, the towns highlights are ancient bridges, churches and particularly lovely examples of terracotta tiling, but the campsite is supposed to be scenic and the beaches are long, lovely and difficult to get to from other centres so you can bask in a large, sunny sphere of personal space and beach-y tranquility.
