In the summer boganvillia blooms over walkways leading from the top of Positano, at the top of the hill, to the beach at the bottom. This much visited Amalfi town has its houses in coloured rows like rice paddy steps and was lauded by John Steinbeck in the 50’s: “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you’ve gone”. The beach is pale grey like many along this coastline and though boats crowd one end it’s a favourite for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, generous apron of sand, ‘beckoning’ water and beautiful backdrop.

As well as the shaded canopy of flowers the road by the beach has shops, cafes and lots of people selling painting of the vista you’re currently admiring.

Five minutes from town is Spiaggia del Fornillo, the watersports beach.
