Also known as Shipwreck Beach, Navagio is indeed satisfyingly like the beaches you imagined being accidentally washed up on as a child. It’s only accessible via a choppy boat ride round the headland from Anafotiria village seafront, so despite its fame, it’s nowhere near being the island’s busiest stretch of sand. It’s well worth the effort once you arrive, too, since it’s protected from the wind by a soaring scoop of bright, white rock and the sand seems to come from the same cliff, since it’s almost too white in the sunshine. And, even better, there really is a shipwreck to explore. It’s a battered, rusty little old cargo vessel which, so the story goes, was wrecked there in 1983 and never claimed because of its illegal cargo of stolen cigarettes. It gradually became embedded in the sand and now it’s one of the most authentic (if rather dangerous) playhouses ever. If the boat ride there sounds like too much effort, there’s also a stomach-churningly high viewing platform built on the very edge of the cliff directly above the beach, so you can have a precarious peep at it that way instead!
