Kuta was Bali's first tourist hub and Kuta Beach was part of the original attractions for visitors, the rest of Kuta was basically a fishing village.  The beach is long and wide, pale, sandy and loved by surfers for the ridges of wave inducing sand under the water.

These days it's also popular because it's close to the airport and has a big range of accommodation options and fun infrastructure for visitors – ie. restaurants, shopping and beach bars.  The region is still recovering from the Bali Bombings, but there's new development going on so it obviously hasn't reduced the beach's appeal that much.
