Located near Berwick-Upon-Tweed in Northumberland, Lindisfarne is known as ‘the cradle of Christianity’. The island has been a place of pilgrimage since St Cuthbert founded Lindisfarne monastery in 654, and visitors can walk to the Holy Island at low tide along a paved causeway from the village of Beal. The 16th century castle also standing on the site is owned by the National Trust.
Boats trips are available from the neighbouring Inner Farne island to view nesting sea birds and the grey seal colony at Megstone, before sailing up the coast to Holy Island. The journey also provides a good opportunity to see porpoise.
