The Malta guides say rather romantically that this bay is ‘untouched by human hands’, and the photos of it certainly look pristine – all clear bright blue waters, bright yellow sand and scooping green approach in the bright sunshine. But it’s difficult to think of somewhere so busy in the peak season as being ‘untouched’.

Ghajn Tuffieha is protected though, which does something towards adding brightness and cleanliness, and it’s a hike down the stairs to the beach from the cliffs, where you get that beautiful view of the scooping green hills that surround it, which means it’s quieter than some of the other beaches in the area – namely next door neighbour beach, Golden Beach.

Protected status means less infrastructure as well but you’ll still find some water sport hire options and some snacks if you didn’t bring your own.

Though not technically legal you do see nude bathers here.
