During the day, people in Chowpatty like to snooze under the shade of the trees. But in the evening, the beach town comes alive. Snack stands begin producing meals for dinner, the sound children echoes down the streets as they play a game of soccer and scream on Ferris wheels, and street performers cause a spectacular scene. Astrologers and gymnasts try to make a quick buck by displaying their skill, and sometimes you can catch a monkey show. Bhelpuri shops serve Mumbai’s most popular snack – crisp puffed rice and semolina doused in spicy chutneys, all scooped into a flat, fried puri – and other vendors serve pav bhaji – a steaming vegetable stew. It is no wonder Chowpatty is Mumbai’s most famous beach.
