Catalina Island is a great escape. While leaving the mainland of Southern California you have a choice of leaving from Marina Del Rey, San Pedro, Long Beach or Dana Point.

In most cases, the Catalina Express can get you there in just about an hour. Marina Del Rey is 55 minutes longer.

Upon arrival,in Avalon, you will notice the crystal blue waters, the abundance of beautifully colored fish in the area and a breath taking view of the Pacific Ocean.

Transportation methods include rented bicycles, rented golf carts and local shuttle services. Walking is always an alternative and gives you a chance to see more of the local flora and fauna.

The local shops, hotels and restaurants are full of friendly people who are eager to help you in any way they can.

Don't forget to include the scenic view of the underwater world by way of the Glass Bottom Boats or even by the Semi Submarine that takes you through the Lovers Cove Sanctuary and the very famous Kelp Forrest where the Kelp reaches more than 30 feet in height.

If you decide to tour the town, you will notice that there are a few popular attractions which include a miniature golf course, a champion golf course and you can admire some of the local campgrounds there.

Take a bus to the airport and witness some of the 500 head of Buffalo that freely roam the island.

The local fishing is also great there. From the Cabrillo Mole, you can catch over 20 species of fish ranging in all sizes, shapes and colors.

Catalina Island

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Southern California and have a go at some water sports then Catalina Island is one to visit. Arriving by boat not only adds to the excitement when you’re visiting a beach; but it is also a rather fitting way to roll up to this particular one.

That’s because Catalina Island beach is all about the ocean; it’s particularly perfect for snorkelling, swimming and scuba diving. If you’re not in the mood for water though, have a wander or cycle by the impressive art deco casino that overlooks the sea.
