Burgh Island lies in Bigbury Bay on the South Devon coast. The privately owned island is cut off twice a day by the high tide, and boasts a recently restored Grade II listed art deco hotel once frequented by Agatha Christie.
There’s also a 14th century pub, the Pilchard Inn, which originally served as a hideout for those wishing to keep a reasonable space between themselves and the law. It’s now popular among holiday makers and coastal walkers, not least because the island’s owners ferry visitors to and fro by tractor when the tide’s in.
The famous Murray rocks, lying to the east of the island, and are very popular with scuba divers, and the sandy intertidal causeway is a great place to go digging for cockles, clams and rag worms.
