A former fishing village and now residential suburb of Dundee, Broughty Ferry is designated as a Local Nature Reserve by Scottish Natural Heritage. The site is an ancient raised beach with a wide profusion of bird and invertebrate species, backed by a range of habitats including grassland, marine derived sand areas, woodland and scrub. Also worth a visit is Broughty Castle, built in 1496 by the Gray family, which sits imposingly on a rocky promontory at the mouth of the Tay.
The castle’s façade still carries pock marks from cannon shot sustained during a history that includes being attacked by General Monck during the Civil War in 1651, and serving as a sea defence battery in World War II.
