Cava is good, cheap cava is better, and cava with a toasted cheese or bacon bocadillo (sandwich) cannot be beaten by anything on earth. La Champagneria is a tiny cava bar, hidden amongst the electrical shops on Carrer de Reina Christina. It’s standing room only, so expect to make friends with the rest of the clientele as you all encroach drastically on each others’ personal space. Shouting at the barmen is the only way you’ll ever get served here – the meek will starve. Cava is sold by the glass and by the bottle, with the bar’s law being that two tapas must be bought with every bottle sold. By tapas, they mean a cheeseburger, a roast chicken sandwich, or other foods hearty enough to keep their customers upright. The bar shuts at 10pm every night - unheard of in Barcelona, and a testament to their staggering popularity. Get there before 8pm if you want a hope of getting in.
