Property of the University of Texas Austin, the McDonald Observatory is an astronomical observatory open to the public. Still an active research facility, the observatory is a great day trip for families, school groups and amateur astronomers. The observatory hosts popular star parties in which amateur astronomers gather for night-time star gazing. The visitor center hosts daily, live solar viewings in the facility’s large theater. Guests may tour the observatory’s largest telescope or stop into the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center’s café, gift shop and interactive exhibit hall.
