As America’s first planetarium, Chicago’s Adler Planetarium remains a leader in science education and astronomical artifacts preservation. Adler hosts almost every type of astronomical instrument dating back to the 12th century, one of the largest collections in the world. Interactive exhibits engage both adults and children, from a 3-D tour of the Milky Way Galaxy to a lunar jump simulator. Visitors can even see what they would look like if they were swallowed up by a black hole, their reflections warped in a funhouse mirror-type exhibit. Adler’s three theaters run a rotating list of educational shows, including its longest-running and popular holiday show Star of Wonder, which tells the story behind the Star of Bethlehem. The Doane, the city’s largest public telescope, allows observers to view celestial objects trillions of miles away from the observatory, overlooking the glistening Lake Michigan.
