Traditional Austrian woodcarving is an art with its own unique history, very much rooted in its place of origin, so to be able to learn the skill and the associated techniques of painting and gilding in the Tirolean Alps, where you can explore the cultural heritage of the subject, is a real bonus.

The Austrian woodcarving weeks available with Schnitzschule Geisler provide just such an opportunity. Two weeks in length, but variable in content depending on your preferences, the courses are run in well-equipped studios and groups are kept small to allow some one-to-one tuition. You can create your own designs or work to models, and tuition in painting and staining as well as extra courses in specialist techniques such as inlaying or combining materials in sculpture. If the peaceful woodland surroundings aren't sufficient inspiration, you can also join trips to the Erzgebirge - the Ore Mountains, at the heart of traditional woodcarving country, where the famous nutcrackers originated - and to some celebrated spa towns and royal residences.
