If you’re keener on the tasting side of a culinary getaway, the luxury weekend at the Franschhoek guest house in the valley of the Hugenots; the food and wine capital of the Cape and the home to some of the best South African wine producers, is probably the trip for you. You can lounge around and soak up the fertile surroundings between meals and then wrap your taste buds around a multitude of celebrated Crus as well as some pretty good food. The area is also conveniently rich with cheese producers and is the home to an internationally renowned cheese festival in the autumn, so you can be sure that an unctuous companion to go with your wine isn’t far away.

If you are really adventurous, Samp and Soufflé will whisk you away from the poolside and the high tech kitchens and take you to get back to basics, learning to butcher and barbecue Impala in the Limpopo game reserve; just make sure you don’t become someone else’s dinner.
