The Hiram Chittenden Locks are a series of locks organising the canals around Salmon Bay. While picturesque and rather a delight to stroll around, these locks serve a v important purpose to the people living in this area, they're there to keep the levels of fresh water in Lake Washington and Lake Union, well, level, and full of fresh water.

The sea can rush in up Puget Sound unexpectedly and the locks keep things reliable and respectful, fresh watery speaking. The locks also raise and lower boats when needed.

As far as the casual visitor is concerned though, these locks are there for pleasurable pursuits – especially for watching the fish scurry up the fish ladder, which can while away many a not-so-dull hour in Seattle.

"Peak" viewing time is during spawning season, from about the beginning of July through mid-August. Recordings of Seattle poet Judith Roche's "Salmon Suite," accompany your viewing experience and provides literary interpretation of the experience through a sequence of five poems about the annual migratory sequence of the fish.

Written by  romantic poet.
