Ancient Greek city ruling an important kingdom during the Hellenistic period. Fortified in the 3rd Century BC, the Pergamon site is divided into the upper and lower city, the upper city, centred around the Temple to Athena being the older part and the lower section spreading downwards along the slope towards the river was born in an epic building program which quickly covered the lower slope during the 2nd Century BC. The remains include several notable ruins including a library, the second largest in ancient Greece, with 250,000 volumes, bathing complex, palaces, temples and one of the steepest amphitheatres of the day estimated at able to seat 10,000. The largest structure on the lower slope was a gigantic gymnasium complex of courts, tracks and arenas. One of the major ruins has had its prize removed for display in another museum: the Great Altar, famous throughout the ancient world, dedicated to the god Zeus and referred to as ‘Satan’s Throne’ is now displayed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
