Llactapata translates to llacta: town and pata: high, so there are several settlements that may have shared this name, though the most famous one is the one viewed on the Inca Trail route to Machu Picchu. Hiram Bingham re-discovered the dozen ruined buildings of this Llactapata in 1912, above Huaquina, but it wasn't until much later that they were properly studied and it was concluded that these buildings were an ancient rest point on the way to Machu Picchu, just as they're a modern one.

It's not just the way that these ruins are decorated, or their astrological alignment, that suggests a Machu Picchu connection, or the fact that they're only about four kilometres away from the main site, the settlement of Llactapat is also linked to the route by a shared drainage system. It's thought the site's agricultural terraces would have helped meet the needs of those residing at Machu Picchu.
