This ancient city lasted from antiquity until the Middle Ages, via Hellenistic, Roman and Christian inhabitants and a few earthquakes that were eventually its undoing, and its sprawling ruins, including its public baths, necropolis, gladiator’s house, and the most spectacular remnant, the Greco-Roman forum, with the backdrop of the Mediterranean, have been restored over a long period.
The city’s frescos are relatively well preserved, but many of the most beautiful or valuable artefacts were looted in the late 19th Century and are now part of the collection belonging to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
