Copan Maya Ruins is best known for the stelae and artistic descriptions that are found through out the site.

Definitely not one of the largest, but is without a doubt one of the most important for the Maya civilization since the hieroglyphs here are the best preserved thus allowing archeologists to get the best 'real' data of life during the powerful Maya Empire.

What my family loved the most, aside from the actual ruins, is:

1. The tunnels. There was a whole world underneath the actual ruins and shows many layers of history and pyramids and eras.

2. The Museum, here you can see the fully preserved stelea and also you can see what the pyramids looked like during the height of the empire.

I so recommend visiting this ruin. If you can't go to Honduras, the town of Copan is only 20 minutes from the Guatemalan border, so if you're in Guatemala, do a day trip for sure!

Where

The ruin itself is located literally 5 minutes from the town of Copan Ruinas. However, you can also do a day trip from Antigua Guatemala since the ruins are only 20 minutes from the Guatemalan border and it a great day trip!
