One of the first Neolithic sites to be discovered bin the Adriatic, dating from over 3000 BC, with hallways and chambers decorated in stalagmites and stalactites, this is site that should be visited by any visitor to Hvar. It's off the beaten track, in the mountains in the centre of the island, and often you'll find you have the place to yourself - what an experience! There are few places in Europe of such significance that can be appreciated in this way. Head for the old village of Humac and ask in the restaurant if the cave is open - if not, they have a key - its a 20 minute walk from there. Alternatively private guides can be hired from Hvar Town - perhaps the best way to enjoy the place if you are a neolithic novice. There are incredible views from here to the sea.

July 2009. The cave is open to visitors on Wednesdays only. A Croatian guide leads you from the restaurant in Humac at 9 am, for a fee. The final approach to the cave is steep and not for the faint of heart.
