The ruins of Banpo, a Neolithic settlement dating back to 5000 BC, have been excavated in Shaanxi. There is ongoing research taking place at this ancient site, with a number of theories existing about the society that lived there. Artifacts including tools and pottery, as well as complete buildings, can be seen by visitors to the Xi’an Banpo Museum.
