The Coricancha was the 'Temple of the Sun', dedicated to the Sun God Inti, and was the most important temple in the Inca Empire. The walls and floors of the temple were once covered in gold, and in the golden courtyard were full sized statues made of gold – no wonder the Spanish thought this was El Dorado.

The Coricancha museum is below the site, which has been clad in the garb of a Spanish colonial church, in underground chambers which display some choice artefacts, including mummies, sacred idols and interesting jewellery, cloth, pottery, metalwork, painting and other art and design. The mummies are some of the most interesting pieces, having the deformed skulls of the Incan elite.
