At their start, amusement parks were originally known as “pleasure gardens.” They featured fireworks, games, dancing, and entertainment. Although political difficulties in Europe caused many of them to close down during the 1700s, Bakken, or “The Hill,” located north of Copenhagen, remained. No longer considered a pleasure garden, but rather an amusement park, Bakken has been operating since 1583 and is claimed to be the world's oldest. It started when Kirsten Piil discovered a natural spring and people began to flock there for fresh water. In order to make a profit, many people would go to this location to sell foods and services to the crowds. Although this tradition is no longer practised, Bakken now features all modern-day amenities of a regular amusement park, with roller coasters, food, children's rides, and games.
