Vision Quest

Listed under Spiritual Retreats in Wales, United Kingdom.

Named for the traditional, spiritual journeys of self-discovery taken by Native American adolescents at their coming of age, Vision Quest is quite literally about vision – in the form of photography. Founded and run by photojournalist and qualified mental health nurse Tony Lane, the organization runs projects which help children and young people (particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds) discover their own creativity, learn about the issues they face and take responsibility for their own futures. Photography is regarded as a ‘therapeutic medium’ here as well as a skill to be learned, and the themes of free representation (photographing emotions, global issues or ambitions, for example) and self-portraiture are explored as well as the more conventional concepts of documentary and landscape photography, after the basics have been taught. Participants gain photography and IT skills, but more importantly can achieve creative goals, make friends, express ideas and inner thoughts, develop self-awareness and self-esteem and even find inspiration for a career or promote and sell their work at exhibitions.
