Possibly a slightly extreme method of combating stress is achieving nivartadhvam, which literally translates as 'retirement'. It is to be found in abundance at traditional monastic centres in Tibet, but for most of us, a three year retreat and full training as a monk seem perhaps a little excessive. The Tharpaland International Retreat Centre in Dumfries is another matter, as it offers a complete break from the emotional and physical demands of modern life without any particular religious commitment. Courses designed specifically to reawaken the spiritual side are available as well, and you can learn how to unwind through yoga, meditation and emotional self-discovery or be schooled in Buddhist tantric meditation methods. The glorious surroundings would probably be quite relaxing enough on their own, as the centre is set in a quiet, unspoiled Scottish forest with unbroken views of the tree-clad hills and peaceful sunsets.
