There seems to be nothing pretentious or awkward about Purple Valley; it’s about as authentic and unspoiled as a yoga retreat can be. The yoga halls are simple and tranquil, the gardens are lush, shady and filled with heady evening scents, the beach has sand as pale as sugar and the water is crystal-clear turquoise.

Accommodation ranges from the simple but beautiful to the luxurious, and all the meals are healthy, tasty and vegetarian and are served at communal tables on bamboo-shaded terraces. Privacy is also paramount and there are plenty of secret spaces in which to meditate or just enjoy the peace.

It is of particular appeal to those who desire the silence and tranquillity of a serious yoga retreat but who also prefer the reassurance of reasonable proximity to reality, since it is close to Mapusa, a market town and the source of much of the fresh produce used at the retreat.

Yoga courses are a minimum of one week in length but a course of at least two weeks is recommended. Your level of experience does not matter – you will still be able to learn from some of the world’s most famous yoga teachers, particularly in the field of Ashtanga yoga, in which they are at the top of their class.

Ayurvedic massages, therapies and beauty treatments are also available.
