Founded in 1982 by Thích Nhất Hạnh, a famous Zen Buddhist writer, poet, teacher and monk, Plum Village began with an ambition to create a world in which the core principle of ‘mindfulness’ could be observed by all. The founder’s controversial pro-peace political work led him to be exiled from Vietnam, so the beautiful Dordogne region became home to his meditation retreat centre, named for its flourishing plum orchards. Today, the retreat is comprised of four dreamy, well-tended hamlets. Accommodation is basic but the surroundings are inspiring; a typical day is spent meditating, learning the principles of Zen Buddhism, sharing discussions with the other visitors (now topping two thousand a year, from around the globe) and helping to keep the community functioning. A monastic lifestyle is observed at all times, so all the food is vegetarian and cigarettes and alcohol are not permitted. Children are allowed to visit during the Summer holidays, but peace reigns for the rest of the year, so this is a place for serious self-discovery.
