The Kopan Monastery is a striking building – an authentic, aesthetic oasis of greenery and rust-and-white walls, pagoda-style roofs, painted columns and shrines perched on the slope of a Himalayan foothill, topped with an imposing Bodhi tree. This area has been steeped in Buddhism since as far back as the late 6th century, but the first Western students of the ancient religion came here in 1969 and still visit and stay to learn from the some seven hundred monks and nuns who live there and in the nearby Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery, who observe the traditional monastic lifestyle of abstinence and meditation.

Daily Dharma talks and meditation courses are available to all who seek inspiration and meaning in life through reflection and self-discovery, and personal guidance and advice is even available from resident monks and nuns. You can begin with a seven-day visit or sign up for the annual one-month meditation course to begin with, but there’s nothing to stop you from staying for years. Such a meeting of Eastern and Western philosophy has been an unconventional, unique privilege and a surprising success for those who have experienced it, despite the not-so-traditional approach.

All revenue goes towards the board and education of the monks and nuns and the work and maintenance of the monastery.
