A lively, youthful, ecumenical Christian organization, the Iona Community is not just for those who are searching for the nurturing support of a spiritual retreat centre, but also for anyone inspired by the idea of voluntary local community work and the application of Christian principles to everyday life. Daily bible reading, prayer and reflection are important too, but this experience is largely about interaction, discussion and vibrant community life. Get involved in gardening and housekeeping, and spend time focusing on themes of trade justice, the environment, interfaith dialogue, religion and sex, and many others. There are four centres based on the islands of Iona and Mull, each with its own garden and stunning natural surroundings. Children are welcomed during the school holidays and quieter retreats are on offer during the Autumn, but this is an ideal place all year round for young adults who seek direction and spiritual guidance amongst others with whom they can identify.
