Lake Annecy

Surrounded by snow capped Alpine mountains of the Haute Savoie, Lake Annecy changes moods with the weather. The clear water sparkles in the sunshine or holds a calm misty beauty in cloudy weather. It is about half a km above sea level, fed by melting snow and ice from the peaks above. The lake water is clean and clear and has been protected since the 1960s as a natural environment.

Cycling and walking on paths round the lake is the best way to enjoy the views and the clean environment, and there are cycle hire shops in Annecy. In summer, families enjoy the swimming beaches around the lake and the grassy picnic areas. The website at has details of activities, where to hire equipment, and places to stay.

The Old Town of Annecy at the north end of the lake is lovely as well with some ancient buildings on islands in the lake, surrounded by a pedestrianised area with shops, cafes and restaurants and parks.

Annecy is about 50km south of Geneva Airport which has has direct flights from several UK airports. Car hire is one way to get there, but there is also a bus route from the Gare Routiere (Geneva's central bus station) to the Gare Routiere in Annecy which is only about 22 euros for a return ticket so combining this with bike hire in Annecy looks like a cost effective way organise a trip.

See for online bus ticket booking.
