The North Pennine area has a rich history and vast archaeological wealth. Hadrian's Wall is by far the best known site, but more are uncovered on a regular basis, such as Dilston Castle, the Nenthead Smelt Mill and several ruined mine sites. Many of these are available to archaeology students of any level, to allow them to gain first-hand experience of working on a real dig.
Depending on your experience or area of interest, you can learn archaeological planning and excavation techniques, how to record your finds and recreate them using CAD, how best to preserve your finds and the site itself, and surveying techniques. Following basic tuition by field staff, hands-on experiences are available even to those who have no prior knowledge, so there is something for everybody.
