Raglan is a relaxed New Zealand coastal town and a world-class surfing resort, blessed with wide, pale, sandy beaches and turquoise waters. A few of its palm-edged bays, such as Manu, are great options for experienced surfers but the waves at Whale Bay are far from scary, so it's an ideal place to practise if you're a beginner. It is here that Surf Dames is centred - a women's only surf school, combined with a spa retreat and cute, cosy, high-quality self-catering accommodation. If you're serious about learning, you can take lessons every day with qualified instructors at the nearby Nagarunui Beach, set within the peaceful, unspoiled Wainui Reserve. They'll start you off with the basics to build your confidence (including going through the motions on dry land and making sure you know your water safety off pat) and then take you straight in to put your newly-learned theory to the test in shallow water. If you already surf and want to progress quickly, you can even arrange one-on-one lessons tailored to your own level of ability. Round off your session with an afternoon on the beach, a therapeutic massage or an indulgent body wrap, and start the next one with a surf yoga class before breakfast.

Accommodation for up to twelve people is available in the Lava Lounge - a lodge with a sea view, a large, modern kitchen (stocked with goodies in preparation for your arrival) and its own hot tub on the terrace - perfect for a girlie holiday - but Surf Dames offer rooms and villas of varying sizes all around the Whale Bay area so singles, smaller groups and even corporate events can be catered for happily.
