Surfing may be on the tame side of adventurous, but it’s certainly ‘radical’ and should be met with enthusiasm by most moody teenagers. At Treyarnon Bay Youth Hostel you can do a four day all inclusive surfing course where they will fit you out with all your gear and then you can take to the waves with all the surf dudes from the Harlyn Surf School. First of all you’ll also learn all the theory on tides and swell before you even get in the water, so you’ll get to do a bit of sunbathing at least, although you should be careful to pay attention as well. If you’re a beginner they’ll then get you in the water and teach you how to catch a wave, correct positioning/trim and different pop-up techniques. For more confident surfers, the lessons will help you improve your technique, start to ride unbroken waves and teach you how best to select the waves you ride. The centre isn’t tied to one beach so you can go in search of the best waves to get the most fun out the whole day surfing, with a break at lunch time to devour a chunky and delicious Cornish pasty on the beach.
