In a modern world of stress and superficiality, it is easy to understand why the investigation of the spiritual capabilities of the human mind could be appealing – not just in terms of an alternative approach to life, but as a method of self-exploration.

The 'New Age Shamanism' of today rides upon centuries' worth of traditions drawn from across the continents, and the ancient skills of meditation, shamanic divination and healing can be applied to contemporary, everyday experiences to enhance and complement modern stress-busting and self-help techniques, and even conventional medicine.

The Foundation for Shamanic Studies holds residential weekend courses all over the world. 'The Way of the Shaman' is their equivalent of a foundation course, covering initiation into the practise of shamanic journeying to assist in the discovery of dormant spiritual abilities. It can be followed by any of their advanced workshops, which deal with everything from nature communication and healing to coping with bereavement, and are organised into longer sessions of five days and two weeks. The Garden Retreat in California is one of their centres. Located in the dramatic Smokey Mountains, it offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking the Appalachian Trail, which runs nearby. Accommodation is cosy, clean and basic. Pick the 'Southwestern room' to stay in-keeping with the area's illustrious Native American history!
