A guided safari in Kenya's famous Mara reserve is undoubtedly a marvellous experience. The memories of the sights and sounds you encounter in such a wild, other-worldly landscape stay with you forever. But what if you could become part of it, exploring its traditional culture and learning to understand its untamed, volatile nature alongside a people who have been part of it for centuries?

Discovery Initiatives are one organisation that has developed a working relationship with a group of the Maasai Mara people who grew up and live in the reserve itself, observing their unique lifestyles as their ancestors did. The preservation of the Maasai way of life is not only wonderful for a visitor from an anthropological perspective, but also from a practical and emotional one. Absorbed into the Maasai world of respect for and interaction with a glorious environment, you will learn skills such as elephant and leopard tracking, survival methods, bow-and-arrow and spear use, camp building and farming in the bush, but you'll also have close encounters with wild animals, hear Maasai stories, take part in songs and dances and meet new people who have about as different a perspective on life as you can possibly imagine.
