Whether it's for the peace and quiet or because you want to know how to catch some dinner, fly fishing is apparently rather addictive and easier to learn than first appearances might suggest. Just as long as the thought of wearing waders and standing thigh deep in a briskly flowing river appeals, you're bound to do well. Thankfully, there are no worms involved – just sharp little hooks disguised as multi-coloured, appetising flies – so horror is kept to a minimum and once you're up an running, you can enjoy the scenery and look forward to your picnic.

Scotland is, of course, very high on the list for top fly fishing spots – both for salmon and trout.
