It's a warm, sunny Autumn morning and the woodland path is muddy from the previous night's rain, and covered in marks and indentations, weaving this way and that. You hear a rustle in the leaves nearby and squint between the trees, but whatever it was has gone...
Tracking may conjure up images of Crocodile Dundee-types, following dangerous predators across extreme landscapes, but it is a versatile skill and not just a survival technique. If you have an interest in wildlife and would like to get closer to understanding the habits of animals local to you, and to be able to observe them, undetected, in their natural habitats, then an ability to track could grant your wish.
A tracking course in the Kentish countryside will teach you to move unnoticed by night and day, deception tactics, how to stalk without being spotted or smelled out, how to identify the age of a trail and what to remember when following a live trail. An understanding of the environment and its inhabitants plays an important part in what you will learn, and as your ability increases, you can take more and more advanced classes.
As a result, the next time you see a badger foraging for worms or a fox and her cubs playing in the woods, luck will have far less to do with it.
