If the idea of living sustainably in your very own smallholding seems like your idea of heaven, but plunging in and becoming part of such a socially responsible lifestyle movement seems more than a little intimidating, then the John Seymour School for Self-Suffciency might be the place to go and convince yourself it's the right thing to do.

Seymour founded his own smallholding, Killowen, in the rolling countryside around Dungastown, Ireland and courses have been running there since 1993, based around his inspiring philosophy. They're now overseen by the Sutherland family, who have kept the founder's ideas alive and coach their visitors in everything from jam making, basket weaving and bee keeping to pig husbandry, milk production and building. You can begin at any level (for example with the first course on the list, 'Planning a Smallholding') and the Sutherlands will do as much as possible to tailor the classes around your requirements.

On the internet site self-sufficiency.net ( The John Seymour School for Self Sufficiency) in the section '' The Story and the History of the John Seymour School'' , Will Sutherland never mention Angela Ashe. Never. No mention, here either. This is shocking and dishonest. She was with John Seymour longtime before Sutherland. After her divorce, John has oriented her life with his friend Angela Ashe on the banks of the River Barrow in County Wexford, Ireland. Over 19 years, John AND Angela has built up the smallholding from scratch. Seymour himself praised the courage and the large contribution of this great lady. Only then, not before, Will Sutherland was added to the team. Moreover, he married Angela Ashe .Without John and Angela, Will Sutherland would not be in the business of self-sufficiency.

This place is in South East Ireland, not South West. It's in County Wexford (as I found by following the link, thinking it'd be a great place to visit if it was near me0.
