This volcano shot to fame in April 2010 when ash from one of its eruptions halted air traffic in the UK and across Europe. The best thing about this is that air traffic in Iceland wasn't affected in the same way because the wind was blowing the ash away from Iceland.

At this time the media called it 'Billy' – which could be because no one could pronounce it, or it could be because that's a relatively close way of pronouncing it's name... Which translates to 'island-mountains glacier' – so it's actually not just a volcano, it's a volcano with a glacier and ice cap on top of it. The most recent eruption prior to 2010 was in 1823.

What's good about this event – though I don't know if people held up at airports will see it this way – is that it's drawn attention to a very beautiful part of the Atlantic Coast, an area of sheer cliff walls down which narrow, white waterfalls tumble. According to some sources when the winds are strong the water from some of the smaller waterfalls is blown back upwards. Cool.

Are there any myths to this volcanoe???

Well, the photos look amazing, but as there are no flights we may all miss the action! Ferry to Iceland?
