In the heart of Salzburg, the 900-year-old Festung Hohensalzburg is a landmark for the city, and is Europe's largest castles, covering more than 14,000m². In 1077, the fortress was built to protect the Archbishop Gebhard, the clergy, and the population from the king. In 1085 the Archbishop was exiled and his castle project was completed by his successors.
The fortress gives visitors an amazing view of the city - built on the Festungsberg hill it's a hike up it or 10 minutes in a cable car.
The fortress has Romanesque stones and the living area has high stock forms. There are numerous events that held in the fortress and state appartments and a fortress museum that's open daily.
The Festung Hohensalzburg offers tours with an audio guide that has eight different languages. Walking around the castle area takes around 30 minutes and touring the interior spaces and museums around 90 minutes.
