Also in New York

Last week I was surprised to find that there are generous souls willing to show you round Tokyo for nix, but today I discovered that you can get the same FREE service in New York from Big Apple Greeters

Apparently the woman who started the service in 1992 thought too many people were put off going to New York because they thought people we're going to be brisk and potentially slightly dangerous and she wanted to show people that New York is a 'great big small town'.  Wow.

I would totally try it though.  If only to get help with the public transport system.
