Anglia Battlefield Tours guides military groups and bespoke parties round the sites of major conflicts, imparting on their groups some understanding of what the people involved went though.
Anglia Battlefield Tours (ABT) was born of an idea - that the young of today should learn about and understand what their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents went through to achieve a society with the advantages which they now enjoy.
Founded in 1997, Anglia set out to take students from all backgrounds to the battlefields of Europe in order that their generation should never forget. Very quickly it was found that it wasn't just battlefields, but the history and genesis of conflict which needed to be understood.
From four trips to Ypres and the Somme in 1997, 2007 saw over 400 schools visit not only these battlefields but also Auschwitz, Berlin, Normandy and even the site of the Battle of Hastings. Today, ABT and its sister company (ABT(M&A) Ltd), which handles tours for adults, routinely take groups not only to the places mentioned but also to Gallipoli, Sicily, Crete, the USA and beyond.
Reasons for going on such a tour vary: students of history, literature or philosophy and ethics are the most obvious, but many groups travel because of a personal connection or simply because of general interest. Organisations such as the Armed Forces and the Police Service also find such tours to be a useful and constructive element of training. Whatever the reason for travelling, most of those who go an a tour find it to be a moving and fascinating experience.
ABT guides are expert and committed; several are badged members of the Guild of Battlefield Guides and some are published authors. They bring history to life not least by telling the stories of individuals. ABT tours are customised to meet the requirements of the group. A small number of set tours are run each year on which individuals and small groups can book, but the majority of tours are with established groups - educational or training establishments, Rotary Clubs, Livery Companies, commercial organisations and associations and clubs of all kinds.
In planning tours, Anglia Battlefields are often shown a faded sepia photograph of a young man in an ill fitting uniform trying to look tough but in fact only managing to look even younger than he was, often with a copy of a last letter to a wife, mother, sister or sweetheart before a battle.
The thing that the owners of the picture all have in common is that they want to know what happened to them.
